Ingredients:

For the patties

  • Half an onion, chopped
  • 2-4 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 2 cans of black or red beans
  • ½ cup of oats or bread crumbs
  • 1 piece of carrot, grated
  • 1 tsp of smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp of cumin
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste

For assembly

  • Hamburger buns
  • Lettuce
  • Tomato
  • Red onion
  • Favorite sauce

For serving

  • Fries

Directions:

Step 1

Place the beans on a strainer to drain off all of their juices, then rinse it under cold water, and shake it well to get rid of the excess water. Transfer the beans into a large bowl, then mash them well using either a fork or a potato masher until nice and smooth, and set them aside. Place a pan on a stove over medium-high heat, then add about 1 to 2 tablespoons of olive oil, and let it heat up before adding the chopped onion. Saute the onions for 3 to 4 minutes or until translucent before adding the minced garlic, then give them a good stir, and let cook for 1 to 2 minutes. Next, scoop them up and transfer them into the bowl of mashed beans, then grate the carrots over them as well, and add the bread crumbs.

Step 2

Season them with smoked paprika, cumin, salt, and black pepper, then mix them all together until fully combined and uniform, and start shaping them into 7 burger patties. Heat up a large skillet or any fry pan on a stove over medium-high heat, then lightly grease the pan with cooking spray, and cook each burger in batches for about 3 to 4 minutes on each side or until nice, crispy, and to the desired doneness. Slice the burger buns through in half, then lightly grill them, and start assembling however you like. You can spread some sauce over the bottom bun first, then place a slice of onion, and tomato, followed by the bean pattie, spread another sauce, top with lettuce, and then place the top bun. Serve with fries on the side and enjoy!
