If you’re looking for a challenge to level up your quilting skills and tingle your brain with tricky but super fun steps, then this quilt project idea by Carol Thelen is perfect for you! This quilt is made up of only half-square triangles and they are strategically arranged to achieve a three-dimensional look, you can use any fabric that you want with this project or you can use the same fabric used in this video tutorial. Either way, one thing is for sure, you’ll love this quilt so much!

Materials:

  • 2.5 yards of black fabric
  • 2.5 yards of white fabric
  • 2.5 yards of medium grey fabric
  • 2.5 yards of accent fabric
  • ¾ yards of binding fabric
  • Border fabric
  • Needle and thread
  • Marking pen, pencil, or chalk
  • Fabric pins
  • Sewing machine
  • Pattern (Click here to download the pattern for free)

Directions:

Step 1

Download and print out the pattern, then refer to the diagram on how to cut the fabric pieces, and start making your half-square triangles. To make the half-square triangles, simply lay the fabric squares together with their right sides together, then draw a diagonal line at the center of the wrong side of the fabric going from corner to corner, and sew on each side of the marked line with about ¼ inch seam allowance.

Step 2

Cut along the marked line and press the seams open, then trim the excess fabric around the square, and proceed to make the rest of the fabric into half-square triangles. Lay out the pieces together into units; the upper left, upper right, lower left, and lower right units, then make sure to check with the diagram whether you’ve properly placed the half-square triangles in the right direction and pin them together per row.

Step 3

Start stitching the half-square triangles together per row, then once done, sew the rows together, and make sure to give them a good press as the diagram indicates. Sew the upper blocks together, then do the same for the lower blocks, and lastly, sew them together in the center before pressing nicely. All that’s left is for you to add the border and binding fabric, then quilt however you want, and you’re done!
