Materials:

  • Main fabric, for the square at the center
  • Lining fabric, for the triangles at the sides
  • Ruler
  • Marking pen or pencil
  • Scissors or rotary cutter and a cutting mat
  • Needle and thread
  • Sewing machine
  • Pattern (Click here to download the template)

Directions:

Method #1

Cut 1 square fabric into 3⅜ x 3⅜ inches, then 2 square fabrics at 2⅞ x 2 ⅞ inches, and cut the smaller squares in half diagonally from corner to corner to make half triangles. Place 1 triangle on the side matching edges with their right sides together, then pin it in place, and sew with a ¼ inch seam allowance before pressing it open. Trim off the excess fabric poking out the sides and you’re done!

Method #2

Cut 1 square fabric into 4½ x 4½ inches, then 4 fabric squares into 2½ x 2½ inches, and draw a diagonal line on the 4 squares from corner to corner. Place one triangle on one side of the large square, then pin them together in place, and sew along the line. Trim off the excess fabric at the side about ¼ inch away from the stitching line, and give it a nice press. Repeat this process with the remaining fabric pieces and you’re done!

Method #3

Print and cut out the pattern, then fold along each line, and cut some squares and triangles at least half an inch bigger than the shape they will cover. Turn the template over, then place the square piece at the back, and pin it in place. Fold the paper at the back, then trim off the excess fabric about ¼ inch from the fold, and flip it over to the fabric side. Place the triangles with their right sides facing together on the sides of the square, then pin them in place, and sew over the line. Press the fabric open, then repeat with the rest of the triangles, and fold the paper down to trim off the excess. Sew along the inner lines, then trim off the excess fabric, and remove the paper at the back.

Method #4

Trace the template out on freezer paper, then fold along each line, and press the fabric square on the shiny side of the paper. Trim the excess fabric about ¼ inch away from the fold, then place the triangles on each side, and pin them in place. Sew them and press them open, then trim off the excess fabrics that are poking out, and repeat the same process with each fold. Give it a final press and you’re done!
