Spring is just around the corner and what better way to care for your plants than to prepare them for the change in season that is about to happen? Make sure that your plants are healthy and in condition with these tips by CaliKim29 Garden & Home DIY on YouTube! You don’t need to spend a lot of money on chemicals and solutions to care for your plants because you can use leaves that you can find around your place. Some might even consider leaves as clutter and would usually throw them out. But, in this case, you’ll need them for a DIY mulch that you can prepare in just 5 easy steps.
Step 1: Collect as many leaves as you can
Collect as many leaves as you can and put them in large garbage bags. These leaves may be a nuisance for others but they are actually an excellent source of nutrients for the soil.

Step 2: Crush them into small pieces
Using your hands, crush the collected leaves into tiny pieces, this will help the leaves to break down easily and quickly.
Step 3: Let them sit in the sunlight
Now, take the bag of crushed leaves, then find the spot in your yard with the most sunlight, and leave the bag of crushed leaves there making sure that the bag is open.
Step 4: Water them down
Next, punch holes around the bag, then water down the leaves until thoroughly wet, and let the holes around the bag drain off all the excess water. Let the bag sit for a couple of days until they start to break down. You can leave them as long as you want.
Step 5: Apply the mulch
For the final step, apply the prepared mulch on top of your garden plants. This will help protect your plants in the winter and keep the cooler in the summer. Plus, it improves soil fertility as the mulch decomposes.
