This dish called shakshuka or eggs poached in a savory tomato sauce has been going viral online and I keep on seeing it everywhere so I finally decided to give it a try. Luckily, there are a lot of recipes that you can also find online, and the one that caught my interest is this one by Home Cooking Adventure on YouTube.

Ingredients for Shakshuka:

  • 1 tbsp of olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 medium red bell pepper, chopped
  • (14 ounces) cans of diced tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp of tomato paste
  • 1 tsp of chili powder
  • 1 tsp of ground cumin
  • 1 tsp of paprika
  • Chili flakes, to taste
  • 1 tsp of sugar
  • Salt, to taste
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

  • Freshly chopped parsley or cilantro, for garnish

Step 1

Place a pan on a stove over medium heat, then add the olive oil, and heat it before adding the onion. Stir and saute the onion for about 5 minutes or until softened, then add the garlic, and continue to saute for a few more seconds.

Step 2

Add the red bell pepper, then stir, and continue to cook for about 5 to 7 minutes until softened. Add the tomato paste and diced tomatoes, then season them with chili powder, ground cumin, paprika, chili flakes, sugar, salt, and pepper, and mix everything well.

Step 3

Let the mixture simmer for about 10 to 15 minutes or until reduced, then adjust the seasonings to your preference, and then crack the eggs over the top of the mixture as shown in the video. Cover the pan, then let it simmer for another 10 to 15 minutes or until the eggs are cooked. Garnish it with fresh parsley or cilantro, then serve with bread or pita, and enjoy!
