Materials:

  • Lining fabric
  • Outer fabric
  • Polyester sheet
  • 1-inch strips of scrap fabric
  • Bias tape
  • Clip
  • Pin
  • Scissors
  • Pencil or marking pen

Directions:

Step 1

Place the outer fabric underneath the lining fabric with both of their right sides facing up. Get a circle object to use as a template, then trace its shape on top of the stacked fabrics. Sew around the traced shape, make a notch at the center, then cut around the circle leaving only about 1/8 allowance from the stitch. Trim around the outer side of the lining fabric outside about 1 inch from the stitch. Then, push and flip the fabric to the back so that the outer fabric is now at the front.

Step 2

Place a polyester sheet underneath the fabric piece and trace the circle, remove the fabric on top and set it aside. Then, sew the left side of the scrap fabric strip on top of the traced shape, stack another with their right sides facing together, then sew at the right side of the stacked fabrics, flip open then stack another strip, and repeat the process until the circle mark is covered.

Step 3

Place the fabric back on top of the polyester sheet and pin in place, sew around the circle slowly and really close to the seam. Place another piece of outer fabric underneath with its wrong side up. Square the fabric with a 1-inch allowance from the round center, curve the edges evenly, then sew along those marked lines. Trim the excess fabric and leave only about 1/8 seam allowance. Sew a bias tape around the outer seams of the coaster with a ¼ inch seam allowance, flip it back then fold and tuck, clip around in place and sew as well.
