There are a lot of ways that you can try to check if your watermelon is ripe and ready for harvest such as checking the color and sniffing it. But, if you don’t want to go through all that trouble of picking the fruit up and putting it back down, then you should learn how to identify a ripe watermelon just by looking at it or quickly flicking it with your finger. This trick by Dirty Gnomes Gardens on YouTube is so brilliant, convenient, and effective, ever since finding out this hack, this has been the only method I’ve been using to discern which fruit to pick and eat. It’s super easy to do and it doesn’t take that much time, too, which also makes this trick perfect for those who have planted a lot of watermelon.

The first method that you can try is by thumping or flicking the watermelon to hear what it sounds like if it’s more of a clinking sound, then it is not ready yet, but if it’s sound like a thump, then your watermelon must be ready for harvest. Another thing that you can look out for is the tendril, if the tendril connected to the fruit is still green, then your watermelon is not yet ripe, and if it’s brown but still has some green at the base, then it’s getting there. What you need to find is a tendril that has turned completely brown up to the base or a tendril that’s dead, because this means that the watermelon is already ripe and ready for harvest.
