To make a pins and paws quilt, you’ll need a pack of 10″ squares, also known as layer cakes, and some background fabric. This block uses the snowballing technique. To make a snowball corner, place a small square on a corner of a larger square or rectangle, then sew a diagonal line from corner to corner. Cut 1/4″ from the sewn line and press open. Watch the video below for the full instructions.
Take a 10″ square and cut two pieces of 2.5″ squares, one 9.5″ x 5″ rectangle, and one 3″ x 5″ rectangle. See photo below for reference. You should have a small and big scrap; set them aside for other projects.
Take the 9.5″ x 5″ rectangle and rotate it so its in a vertical position. Cut a 2.5″ background square and place in the upper right corner of the rectangle. Sew corner to corner, then trim excess. Open it and press it flat.
Cut a 2.5″ x 5″ background piece. Place the 2.5″ colored squares on top, covering the whole rectangle. Sew corner to corner forming a V shape. Trim the excess, open, and press.
Sew the unit from step 3 to the 3″ x 5″ rectangle colored piece.
Cut a 5″ background square and sew on the right side of the head.
Take the unit from step 2 and sew them together to make the block. Press it flat.
Repeat the steps with the remaining squares.
