Step 3 (diced onion): Place one half of the onion with its cut side down, then cut vertical slices parallel to each other, turn it around, and make cuts perpendicular to the first cuts.

The Trick: The secret not to crying when cutting onions is to refrigerator or freeze the onions first, this will help slow down the release of the irritant that causes you to cry giving you enough time to cut or slice. You can also try cutting an onion under a vent or kitchen fan to divert the irritant away from your eyes.
