Materials:

  • Rubber mat
  • Jersey knit fabric or old sweatshirt/ shirt
  • Rotary fabric cutter
  • Rubber backing
  • Tweezers, pen, crochet hook, or rug hook
  • Fabric scissors

Directions:

Step 1

Gather your fabrics together, you can use jersey knit, an old sweatshirt, or an old shirt, but you’ll need a lot of them. Next, start cutting the fabrics into strips of about an inch and a half wide and about five inches long. For the whole rug, all you have to do is to poke the ends of each fabric strip through two adjacent holes in the rubber backing.

Step 2

Then, pull each strip tight against the backing, it might be easier to use a tweezer, but you can also use your fingers, a pen, a crochet hook, or even a rug hook, whichever you find comfortable using. For a thick and plush rug, simply place a piece of fabric on each hole of the backing, then skip on every fifth hole or so, this will thin the rug only a little and use less fabric. This will also speed up the rug-making process. Once you’ve filled in the backing, use a sharp pair of fabric scissors to trim and even up the ends.
