Need a lanyard for your keys or ID? Well, you can always try to sew one on your own instead of buying from the store! This sewing project by Hello Sewing on YouTube is super easy to follow even beginners in sewing will find this simple. Plus, if you have some scrap fabric strips, then you can use that too.

Materials:

  • 36.5″ x 3″ long strip of cotton fabric
  • Matching thread
  • ¾″ (2cm) swivel clamp, lobster clamp
  • Scissors or rotary cutter and a cutting mat
  • Ruler or measuring tape
  • Iron and ironing board
  • Sewing clips or pins
  • Sewing machine

Directions:

Step 1

Cut your fabric strip to 3 inches wide by 36.5 inches long (93cm x 7.5cm) or you can adjust the measurement according to your preference. Next, fold the fabric strip in half lengthwise with the wrong sides facing each other inside, then give it a nice press. Open the fabric, then fold both ends towards the fold line in the center, and press the whole lanyard.  Fold the fabric in half lengthwise again, as if you were making a bias tape, then secure them in place with clips or pins.

Step 2

Now, topstitch along both sides of the lanyard with a 1/8 inch seam allowance, then slide the swivel attachment and fold the lanyard in half making the short ends meet. Check the fabric to ensure that the edges are aligned and see if any twists need to be straightened. Stitch the loose ends with a ¼-inch seam allowance a few times over for extra durability, then flip the lanyard inside-out so that the raw edge is on the inside of the strap. Sew back and forth just above the swivel attachment a few times to secure it in place and ensure that the seam is strong enough.
