You may have tried making a half-square triangle before but have you heard of a half-rectangle triangle? It’s almost exactly the same thing and the techniques used are pretty easy, too, so I’m sure that you can make this perfectly even on your first try.

Materials for Half-Rectangle Triangle:

  • Assorted print fabric
  • Ruler
  • Scissors or rotary cutter and a cutting mat
  • Fabric pins
  • Needle and thread
  • Iron, for pressing
  • Sewing machine

Step 1

Cut 2 contrasting fabrics at 5×21 inches, then lay them together with their right sides facing, and pin them in place. Repeat the same with 2 other contrasting fabrics, then stitch them together with ¼ inch seam allowance, and press the seams towards the darker fabric.

Step 2

Cut them into 5-inch wide pieces and you’ll end up with 4 pieces of each fabric combination. Place 2 contrasting pieces together with their right sides facing up, then cut them diagonally in half, and then mix and match the pieces to rearrange the unit.

Step 3

Lay them with their right sides facing and edges matching as shown in the video, then stitch the edges, and press the seams nicely. Cut off the nubs and trim the fabric as needed, then put them together, and finish your quilt however you want.
