Materials:

  • Jelly roll
  • Scissors and rotary cutter and a cutting mat
  • Fabric, for inner border
  • Fabric, for the outer border
  • Binding fabric
  • Batting fabric
  • Backing fabric
  • Marking pen
  • Iron, for pressing
  • Sewing machine

Directions:

Step 1

Unroll the jelly roll, then choose 5 different strips, and cut them into 2½ inch squares, set them aside. Next, cut 6½ x 2½ inch strips, then start assembling the braid. Take a piece of square, then take whichever piece of strip you want to work with, and lay it on top of the square fabric with their right side facing and edges matching. Sew them together on one side, then press it open, lay another strip on top of the square making sure it’s opposite the other strip, then sew, and press it open.

Step 2

Continue building the braid on each side making sure to press every now and then. Once you have about 5 sets of braids, sew them together by adding a 2½-inch wide strip in between each for the inner border, then once done, sew the same strips at the top and bottom of the braids, and press nicely. Add the outer border, batting fabric, backing fabric, and binding fabric, then quilt however you want, and you’re done.
