Ingredients/Materials:

  • Water
  • Salt
  • Cornstarch
  • Food coloring, optional
  • Ziploc bag
  • Fabric cover, optional

Directions:

Step 1

Place a pot on a stove over medium-high heat, then fill it with water (the amount depends on the size of your ice pack), and then bring it up to a boil. Next, add about ½ cup of salt or more depending on the amount of water, then gently stir them together until it completely dissolves, and then gradually add ¾ cup of cornstarch while whisking continuously until combined and until all of the clumps are gone.

Step 2

Once the mixture starts thickening, add a few drops of food coloring, or skip this step if you want to cover your ice pack, then continue to whisk them together until it comes to a boil and the consistency has become thick and gloppy. Turn off the heat, then remove the pot, and set it aside to cool completely for about 45 minutes or more.

Step 3

After the mixture has cooled down, scrape and transfer it to a bowl lined with a Ziploc bag, then pull the edges, and start sealing the bag while pressing out all of the air creating a vacuum effect. Double the Ziploca bag for extra security against leaks, then leave it as is, or cover it with fabric, and place it in the fridge or freezer to let it cool.
