If you have a couple of old clothes or fabrics and you don’t know what to do with them, then put them to good use by transforming them into a handmade braided rug. You can make this rug into any size you want and also play with the colors depending on what fabric you have in hand.

This also doesn’t require sewing, just at the very beginning of the project and at the end when you finish, so if you don’t have a machine and you’re working on a soft fabric material, then you can sew it by hand. Watch this video tutorial by Beverly Martin on YouTube to learn how.

Step 1

Prepare the fabric strips that you want to use, then sort them according to their colors, and plan how the order you want them to be. Take 5 strips and fold each of them over at the top as shown in the video, then stack them together lining them up nicely, and stitch them.

Step 2

Start braiding them as demonstrated in the video, then hold the top part of your braid with something heavy, and continue braiding making sure it’s not too loose or too tight. Snip a hole at the end of each strand, then do the same for the next strands that you want to connect, and loop them together tightly to extend the length.

Step 3

Continue braiding until you reach the desired length of your rug, then turn it over, and pay attention to the demonstration on how to connect your braids to the side. You can change the color of the strands as you build your rug, once you reach the end, secure the strands by stitching them, and then cut off the excess strands.
