Start with a slip knot and do 4 chains.  Slip stitch into the first stitch to form a ring. Make a chain of three that counts as a double crochet and go back to the center of the ring.

Do 11 more double crochets. In total, you will have 12 double crochets.

Make three chains, turn the project back across, and put two double crochets in every stitch. Work all the way around to make a total of 24 stitches. Make sure to put the last two double crochets on top of the chain three. Chain three, turn the chain and jump to the next stitch to put in two double crochets.  When in the next stitch, do 1 double crochet and gradually increase.  Repeat the process all the way around: 1 double crochet, 2 double crochets.

In the end, the last step should have two stitches on top of the chain 3.  In total, you should have 36 stitches at the end of the round.

Chain three and turn the work to put in 1 double crochet. Next, two double crochets. Repeat the process all the way around: 1 double crochet, 1 double crochet, and 2 double crochets. Ending with an increase, you should be on top of chain three.

Chain three, and this time start with three double crochets in a row and increase. Repeat all the way around. In total, you will end up with sixty stitches. Go down and up the V shape of the work with a single crochet. When you get down to the V center, single crochet right through and chain 12 to make the ring hook. Continue working back up to the V shape.

Single crochet the top stitch and go back into the same stitch and half double crochet. Then, double crochet all in the same stitch. Go to the next stitch and work on triple crochets.  Repeat until you make 8 triple crochets in the same stitch. Then, start decreasing back down.

Work five single crochets in a row. Skip 2 and then seven stitches around. When you reach the end, pull tight to secure and trip off the excess yarn. Starting with the red yarn, chain one, single crochet, half double, and then double crochet.  Skip and repeat the prior process to make 5 shell stitches.

Then, sew the excess yarn tail into place. Pull the yarn tight and trip. For the red part of the chicken’s chest, start with a single crochet and chain one. Jump to the next stitch, single crochet, and one half double crochet. Repeat to get the length you prefer.  Tie off the tails and trim the excess. Using yellow yarn, start with a chain of three and single crochet in the second stitch from the hook for the beak. Decrease to the next stitch and slip stitch. Tie off the tails and trim the excess.
