Breaking it down into parts will make it easier. If you look closely, you will notice that the block is made from half-square triangles and flying geese units. All four corners are half-square triangles, the middle units, on the other hand, are two flying geese units sewn in pairs. The center is just a plain background square. Learn how to make it through the video tutorial below.

Pair the 3 7/8″ light squares with the 3 7/8″ dark squares. Place them right sides together. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on each pair. Sew 1/4″ away from both sides of the diagonal. Cut directly on the line. Press each HST open toward the dark side.
Take the rectangles and small squares. Make 8 flying geese for the two colors.
Start with the dark squares. Place one dark square on the end of a rectangle, right sides together. Sew a diagonal line from corner to corner. Trim excess leaving a 1/4 inch seam allowance, then press it open. Repeat with the other side. Do the same process for 3 more rectangles.
Repeat with the light squares.
Sew dark and light flying geese units in pairs. See the photo below for reference.
Arrange the units just like in the photo below. Sew them in rows first, then press flat. Once the rows are done, sew them together to make the block. Press it flat.
For the other variation, cut the block in half horizontally and vertically. Make sure to cut on the points. Swap the top right and the left bottom pieces, then the top left and right bottom pieces. Sew them in pairs first. Once done, sew them into a block.
