In this step by step instructions, John Kirkwood will show you how to make this beginner-friendly bread using your Dutch oven. It’s a simple bread recipe that can feed a large group and is perfect for holiday gatherings. Watch the video below to learn how to make it.

Ingredients:

  • 18 oz strong white bread flour
  • 280 ml lukewarm water
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 2 tsp instant or active dry yeast
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp butter, softened and unsalted

Directions:

Step 1

Add 1 tsp sugar to a 280 ml lukewarm water. Next, add 1 tbsp softened unsalted butter and 2 tsp active dry yeast. Stir all together and set aside to let it bloom. After this, transfer the yeast to a large mixing bowl, then add 18 oz strong white bread flour and 1 tsp salt. Mix and combine together until dough forms. Once done, transfer the dough to your working surface and knead it for ten minutes. After this, tighten the skin of the dough by shaping it into a ball, then put it into an oiled mixing bowl. Cover the bowl and place it in a warm spot for an hour.

Step 2

Refrigerate the Dutch oven for at least half an hour, then grease it with some butter. Back to the dough, punch out the gas, then transfer it back to your working surface. Bring the dough together, form it into a ball, then gently place it in the Dutch oven. Cover it again and let it rise for 45 minutes. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees F when there are only five minutes left on the proofing.

Step 3

Now, gently cut some slices on top of the bread, then cover the pot with its lid. Place the Dutch oven in the preheated oven and bake it for 30 minutes. When there are only five minutes left, quickly remove the lid of the pot to allow the top to get some color and to crisp.
