From the 9 quarter yards, cut 1 piece of 5″ x 44″ and 1 piece of 2 1/2″ x 44″. Cut each in half along the fold, so you’ll have 18 strips of each size.
If you are using fat quarters, cut each of the 9 fat quarters into 2 pieces of 5″ x 22″ strips and 2 pieces of 2 1/2″ x 22″ strips. You’ll have 18 strips in total for each size.
If you are using fat eights, cut 1 piece of 5″ x 22″ and 1 piece of 2 1/2″ x 22″ from each of the 18 fat fabrics. You will also have a total of 18 strips of each size.
For the background, cut 18 pieces of 2 1/2 x 44″, then cut each strip in half along the fold. You’ll get 36 strips in total. Next, cut 9 pieces of 7 x 44″ and cut each strip in half along the fold to get 18 strips. Then cut 2 pieces of 13 1/4″ from the width of the fabric, sub-cut into 6 pieces of 12 1/4″ squares. Cut each across both diagonals so you’ll have 24 side-setting triangles. Cut 1 piece of 7″ with the width of the fabric. Cut 2 pieces of 7″ squares. Cut across one diagonal to get 4 corner triangles.
For the border, cut 8 pieces of 3″ with the width of the fabric.
Get one piece of a 5″ colored strip and place on the middle of two – 2 1/2″ background strips. Press the seams toward the center strip, then cut into 5″ segments. You’ll have 4 from each strip unit. Do the same process to make a total of 72.
Sew a strip unit with a 7″ background and a 2 1/2″ colored strip. Press the seam toward the print, then cut into 2 1/2″ segments. You’ll get 8 from each strip unit for a total of 144.
Create the block in the photo. Sew the strips together and press the seam allowances on one side. The block should measure 9″. Create 8 blocks from each color. Do the same process for all the colors to make a total of 72 blocks.
Lay the blocks and set triangles with the small squares on the top and bottom. Sew into rows, then stitch the rows together.
