Directions:

Step 1:

Round the edges to a one-quarter inch using the sander so the epoxy will flow smoothly.

Step 2:

Put two coats of the epoxy undercoat in white into the medium density fiberboard and let it dry. After drying, use higher grit sandpaper to smoothen the surface of the MDF. Make sure to remove the dust after sanding.

Step 3:

Shake the cans of your spray paint vigorously and test spray on a piece of cardboard or plastic so you’ll know how to apply them to the MDF. When spray painting, do not hold the tip of the can. Just gently press it from a distance. Always start at the edges. Once you are done with the edges, position your arm parallel to the MDF and hold the can up high. Spray paint the surface.

Tip: It takes time for the spray paint to dry. Test the samples first if it’s already dry before touching the piece. Or better to wait until the next day.

Step 4:

When it’s completely dry, sand it using 220 grit sandpaper to smoothen the texture. Remove the dust from the board. Make 2 coats at 3 ounces per square foot for the first and second coats. Mix the epoxy to a 1:1 ratio. Trowel it using a 1/8 by 1/8 square notch trowel. Before chopping the surface, pull any loose bristles out of the brush and prime it. Then chop the surface in a random fashion. Brush the edges in long horizontal strokes after chopping for an even finish. Torch to remove any bubbles then let it dry for the final coat.

Step 5:

Sand it again using 220 grit sandpaper and remove the dust. You can use some acetone to help clean the dust. Repeat the process of mixing, pouring, chopping, and torch. Then let it dry.

You now have your own budget-friendly DIY granite countertop!
