Materials:

  • witch’s cauldron
  • ultrasonic pond foggers
  • spray foam
  • orange string lights
  • black spray paint
  • mod podge
  • twine
  • plastic bags
  • black duct tape
  • oatmeal
  • long sticks
  • metal chain
  • hot glue gun
  • pliers
  • scissors
  • drill
  • paint brushes

Directions:

Step 1

First, give your cauldron black hammered spray paint all over it. Next, to make it look like bubbled over and leaked over the edges, take some oatmeal and mod podge, mix them together, and dab them on. Once all the oatmeal was on there, let the mod podge dry for two hours, then put one more layer of just mod podge over everything just to secure the oatmeal. After everything is dry, it’s now time to paint it. Aiming for a rusty look, the way you paint rest is you alternate big splotchy areas of brown and black. Use just one brush, and two different paints on the cauldron, and use a light-tapping motion, twisting your brush as you go. Then, take your orange or copper paint, and do little dabs of highlights all around. The final for the painting is to take all of those little chunks of oatmeal and kind of paint them green to add details. Now, for the cauldron holder, take two bamboo sticks and put them parallel to each other. Then, take your third stick, put it between the two sticks, and that’s perpendicular to the other two sticks. Tie a knot around that one stick, wrap it around a few times, then tie it off and prop it up. Once it’s up, wrap some more twine around the top.

Step 2

To hang the cauldron, get some chain, paint sprays it, then cut it into three sections. Next, drill some holes in the sides of the cauldron and open up the chain and attach them. For the faux fire beneath the cauldron, gather your orange lights, then spray foam all over it. The spray foam is great to create a pile of coals around the ground. Let the spray foam set before painting it. To achieve the pile of burning embers look, use some red, black, and gray spray paint. Moving on to the bubbling effect of the cauldron, you need some fog inside. To make this, build a platform (using foam), and put a bowl on the top where the ultra-side fogger and the water will sit in. Take some black duct tape and cover the gap around the cauldron. Now, to hang the cauldron, take the chain and hook it up on the twine at the top of the bamboo holder, then place the faux fire beneath the cauldron. For the finishing touch, take an outdoor light, attach it to the top of the bamboo holder, and point it down at the fog to give the fog an eerie glow.
