You probably know the disappearing nine-patch and disappearing four-patch, but have you heard of the disappearing pinwheel quilt? It’s a beautiful pattern by Missouri Star that anyone can make at home. It may look like it’s hard to sew at first glance but trust me, it’s easier than you think. You can even finish one block in just a few minutes.

If you already made pinwheel blocks before, this pattern will be a breeze. If you are still a beginner and haven’t tried one yet, do not worry, as the steps are very clear. The first thing you need to do is make half-square triangles, then turn them into a pinwheel. Once you have the block, you just need to cut it four times and then rotate the outside squares. That’s it, and you are done with one disappearing pinwheel block.

Choose 30 pieces from each package of your layer cakes. Take one of your solids and one of the colors. Put them right sides together. Sew all the way around the outside edge with a quarter of an inch seam allowance.
Cut it in diagonally in both directions. Now you have 4 half-square triangles. Set the seams and iron them open.
Arrange them together in a pinwheel just like in the photo below. Sew them together to make the block.
Divide the block into three equal pieces, then rotate and cut again into three equal pieces to get 9 small squares.
Rotate the outside squares just like in the photo below. Sew them just like a 9 patch. Once done, press it flat.
You need 6 rows with 5 blocks each for a total of 30 squares. Sew them together, then add a 2 1/2″ inner border.
Turn your remaining layer cakes into pinwheels for the final row of border, then add a 2 1/2″ outer border.
