To make the homemade version, you will only need 8 ingredients – onion, sour cream, cream chicken soup, black pepper, salt, cheddar cheese, hash browns, and butter. The preparation time will only take about 5 minutes. This is a great meal option for busy days or if you have unexpected guests coming over in just a few hours. In a bowl, combine the sour cream, cream chicken soup, black pepper, salt, and onion. Mix until well combined.
Add 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese, hash brown, and melted butter. Mix until well incorporated.
Spray a casserole dish with cooking spray, then transfer the hash brown mixture. Spread evenly. Cover with aluminum foil on top.
Place inside the oven and bake at 350F for 45 to 55 minutes. In the last 10 minutes, pull it out, remove the foil, and sprinkle the remaining shredded cheddar cheese.
