Why Use Coffee Filters to Make Paper Flowers?
- Texture. Coffee filters have a texture that can add visual interest to your handmade flowers.
- Lightweight and easy to shape. They are thin and pliable, allowing the petals to have a natural drape, mimicking real flowers.
- Absorbent of coloring. This type of paper can easily absorb food coloring, marker inks, and paints, making it simple to get a wide range of colors and effects for your flower petals.
- Accessible and inexpensive. You can find them in most local grocery stores in an affordable price.
- Durable. Coffee filters are durable unlike other types of papers. They can hold their shape once formed, and they don’t tear easily.

Folding the coffee filter
Flatten the coffee filter and fold it in half three times.Shaping the petals
Take your scissors and cut three small curves on the wide end, just like in the photo below. Make 8 pieces.Coloring the flowers
Prepare your paint or dye by diluting it. You can use water color, acrylic, food coloring, or markers. Once ready, dip each of the coffee filter pieces in the colors.Drying the petals
To quicken the drying process, open each coffee filter and lay it on a flat surface in a well-ventilated room with direct sunlight. If you live in a cold environment, you can place them in the oven to speed up the drying time. Start with the lowest temperature, dry them in short intervals, and check often to avoid browning or burning.Combining the coffee filters
Once they are fully dried, stack eight pieces of coffee filters. Try not to align the curves to create more visual interest. Take your stapler and staple in the center. If you are using a small stapler like mine, don’t worry, as you can fold the edges.Making the paper flower
Take one layer of coffee filter and bring the sides toward the center, then crumple. Repeat for all layers.Opening the petals
The last step is to carefully unfold or spread the outer layers a little bit to achieve the fluffy and full look of marigold flowers.
