Use a Potato to Clean Your Rusty Cast Iron

Life With Sylvia on YouTube shares with us this easy hack on how to get your rusty cookware looking like new with just a few items that I bet you probably have on hand – a potato, salt, oil, and your everyday dishwashing routine items. Talk about organic cleaning that solves a common household problem in a practical way. With just these ingredients, a few minutes, and good elbow grease, your rusty cast iron or aluminium pans will look good as new. Plus, this great tip is not limited to cookware, but anything metal to get rid of pesky rust.
Materials:
- Potato
- Salt
- Oil
- Dishwash soap
- Water
- Cloth scrubber
Directions:
Prepare all the needed materials.
Cut the potato in half and set it aside. Pour a generous amount of salt into the rusty frying pan. Also, pour a good amount of oil Hold the potato with the ends facing the palm of your hand and the open area facing the outside.
In a circular motion, scrub the potato all over the rusty frying pan like a hand scrub. You will notice the rust rubbing off and sticking to the potato. Rub thoroughly and make sure to include the side that has rust. Next, rinse using hot water followed by a cloth scrubber.
Add dish soap and wash as usual to remove the remaining grease. Rinse thoroughly with running water. Then, using paper towels, tap until dry. Coat your pan with some oil and spread it out using paper towels. Make sure to rub the oil on all sides.
