Materials:

  • 18 x 22″ piece (fat quarter) solid cream (triangle-squares)
  • 4 pcs. 18 x 22″ (fat quarters) orange, black, gold, and brown plaids (triangle-squares, backing, and binding)
  • 13 & 1/2″ x 31 & 1/2″ batting

Directions:

Step 1

For your light fat quarter, you’re going to cut 20 pcs. 3 & 7/8″ squares. For your other fat quarters, if you’ll use 4 different colors, you’re going to use one of those colors for your binding, then two pieces of the remaining fabric can make your backing. But if you’ll use five fabrics, cut four squares from each of them measuring 3 & 7/8″ squares and 20 pcs. in total. For the binding, 5 pcs. 2 & 1/2″ x 21″ strips. If you’re using yardage, you only need three of those binding strips. The batting should be at least 31 & 1/2″ x 13 & 1/2″. Now, the first thing you’ll need to do is mark a diagonal line on the wrong side of all your light-colored squares. Sew a 1/4″ to each side of that line. Cut on that drawn line after sewing. Repeat this process to all of your light squares. Once you’ve got all of your square pairs sewn together to your triangle squares, you’ll put together the top of the runner.

Step 2

Lay out your triangle squares in four horizontal rows, then sew together pieces in each row. After this, press the seams in one direction, alternating with each row. Now, join the rows to make the table top of the runner. Next, join the short edges of the gold plaid rectangle and brown plaid rectangle to make 31 & 1/2 x 13 & 1/2″ table runner backing. After this, layer the whole runner backing fabric down, the wrong side up, the batting, and backing, then baste. Next, quilt just outside of those colored zigzags. Start in the center of the runner and work toward each end. After this, sew on the double-fold binding, going all around, and then miter your corners. Bring the binding around to the back and hand sew it in place. Your table runner is now complete.
