Your dining table will surely be the topic of any conversation when you have these charming star quilt table runner and placemats by Jordan Fabrics. Aren’t the colors and design beautiful? The pattern is composed of half-square triangles and quarter-square triangles. These are perfect for those who just started quilting, as they are easy and beginner-friendly. Watch the video below for detailed instructions.
Take 16 light and 16 dark 5″ charm squares. Get one light square and draw a diagonal line on the back side from corner to corner. Place it on a dark square, right sides together, and sew 1/4″ away from each side of the drawn line. Cut along the diagonal to get two half-square triangles. Open them and press the seam allowances toward the darker fabric. Trim the corners and cut them into a 4 5/8″ square. Repeat for the remaining squares to make a total of 32 half-square triangle units.
Place one half-square triangle on top of another half-square triangle. Draw a diagonal opposite way of the stitched seam on the top one. Sew 1/4″ away from each side of the line., then cut along the drawn line. Now you have two-quarter square triangles. Open, press, and trim. It should now measure 4 1/4″ square. Repeat to make 32 quarter square triangles.
Take 15 light and 16 dark 5″ charm squares and cut them into 4 5/8″ squares. Repeat the same steps to make 16 half-square triangle units measuring 4 1/4″.
Get 8 pieces of dark 5″ charm squares and cut them into 4 1/2″ squares.
Arrange the units as shown below. Sew them into rows, then sew the rows together. It should now measure 11 3/4″. Make 8 blocks in total.
For the inner border of the placemat, cut 3 pieces of 2 1/2″ width of the fabric, then sub-cut to 8 pieces of 11 3/4″. Sew them onto 2 sides of the 4 blocks. For the outer border, cut 8 pieces at 2 1/2″ width of the fabric, then sub-cut to 16 pieces of 15 3/4″. Sew onto the top, bottom, and sides. For the backing, cut 2 pieces of 18″ width of the fabric, then sub-cut to 18 by 20″.
Place the backing and top onto the batting right sides together. Secure with pins and sew around the edges leaving a 4″ opening. Trim off any extra batting and backing and seam allowance in the corners to remove bulk. Flip it right side out through the opening, then stitch the opening to close. Press the edges flat, quilt, and steam press.
For the table runner, sew 4 blocks together. Cut 4 pieces of 2 1/2″ width of fabric for the border. Sew onto all sides of the runner. For the backing, cut 2 pieces of 17″ width of fabric and sew into one long piece. Use the flip finish method, quilt, and steam press.
