Cut 23 of your 10″ squares into 4 1/2″ squares. For the other 19 squares, cut them into 2 1/2″ squares.
Start with the four corner blocks first. You need 2 1/2″ background squares, 2 1/2″ colored squares, and 2 1/2″ by 4 1/2″ background rectangles. Sew a 2 1/2″ background square and a 2 1/2″ colored square together. Next, get one of the rectangles and sew it to the unit. Press it open. Make 3 more for a total of four. One for each corner.
Make the star. Take four of the 4 1/2″ background squares, one of the 4 1/2″ colored squares, and eight of the 2 1/2″ squares. Snowball the corners on one side of each 4 1/2″ background squares to make the star legs. You’ll just add a 2 1/2″ square on a corner of a 4 1/2″ background square, and sew it diagonally from corner to corner. Trim and open. Repeat to the other corner on the same side. Do this for the remaining background squares.
Arrange the star. See the photo below for the reference. Sew them together, then press it flat.
Make the next block. Choose five 4 1/2″ colored squares. Place one in the center, then place the other four on the sides with the corners touching. Next, get a 2 1/2″ by 4 1/2″ rectangle and 2 pieces of 2 1/2″ squares, then sew them together into a square. Repeat until you make four, then place them on the spaces on the first five blocks laid out just like in the photo below. Sew them together to make the block.
For the first row, you need two star blocks and three secondary blocks. For the second row, you’ll start with a star block, so you need 3 of those and only 2 of the secondary block. Repeat for the remaining rows. There will be 6 blocks down and 5 blocks per row for a total of 30 blocks.
