This recipe is a straightforward dish. To make the hamburger steaks, all you need to do is mix all Salisbury steak ingredients in the bowl and marinate for half an hour. Once it’s ready, form the mixture into patties, then they are ready to fry. Transfer the cooked patties to the gravy sauce and simmer until cooked through. It’s a very simple recipe that comes together quickly. Serve it over mashed potatoes or white rice.
For the Salisbury steak:
For the gravy:
Add the ground beef to a mixing bowl and break it with your hands. Add Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, beef bouillon powder, salt, pepper, garlic, onion powder, cayenne, egg, and breadcrumbs. Mix well with your hands. Place it in the fridge for 30 minutes.
Once the mixture is chilled, form it into 5 to 6 ounces of oval-shaped patties. Lightly season them with your favorite all-purpose or steak seasoning. Do not add too much as they are already seasoned.
Place a skillet over medium-high heat and add 1 tablespoon of oil and 1 tablespoon of butter. Once the skillet is hot and the butter has melted, add the hamburger steaks. Cook them for about 90 seconds per side. Once done, transfer to a plate and set aside.
Make the gravy. In the same skillet, add a little bit of butter, onions, and mushroom. Cook until caramelized and tender for about 5 to 7 minutes. Next, mix in the beef base, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, and remaining butter.
Add 3 tablespoons of all-purpose flour to the gravy and mix until well combined. Cook for 1 to 2 minutes, then add the beef stock. Let it come to a boil, then reduce to simmer.
Add the heavy cream and browning (if needed to darken the color). Mix well, then season the gravy to taste.
Place the hamburger steaks back into the gravy and let them simmer until cooked through. Internal temperature should reach 165 degrees internal temperature. Serve it over rice or potatoes.
