Ingredients:

  • 10 oz hearty white sandwich bread, cut into 1″ pieces
  • 1/2 cup packed + 1/3 cup packed light brown sugar, divided
  • 3/4 tsp table salt, divided
  • 6 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 1/2 lb Golden Delicious apples, peeled, cored, and cut into 1/2″ pieces
  • 1 lb Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and cut into 1/2″ pieces
  • 2 tbsp water
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 3 3/4 oz blackberries
  • vanilla ice cream, or sweetened whipped cream

Directions:

Step 1

Slice the white sandwich bread into 1″ pieces, then transfer them to a food processor and pulse until coarse pieces. After this, add 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar, and 1/2 tsp salt. Continue to pulse for 5 more times. Finally, add 6 tbsp melted unsalted butter and pulse for 5 more times. Now, add 2 1/2 cups of this breadcrumb to the bottom of an 8″ baking dish, then loosely press the breadcrumbs on the bottom. Reserve the rest of the breadcrumbs for the top.

Step 2

Prep the apples and place them in a large mixing bowl. To that, add 2 tbsp water, 1 tsp vanilla extract, 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg, 1/4 tsp salt, and 1/3 cup packed light brown sugar. Mix until the apples are well-coated. Once done, layer the apples into the baking dish, then distribute the berries into the apple layer. Finish it off by topping the remaining breadcrumbs. Slightly press the breadcrumbs down using your palm.
