Southern fried potatoes are one of the all time favorite comfort foods I have ever eaten. Fried potatoes are also excellent with sausage and onions, so when I found this recipe for Southern fried potatoes with sausage, onions, mushrooms, and cheese by the great YouTuber, ThePohto Southern Cooking I really got excited. My grandma used to make a fried potato dish that was very much like this but she called it German fried potatoes and we all loved it. We used to eat the German fried potato medley with her famous pork chops or sometimes just on their own with lots of spicy ketchup. This Southern potato dish by Pohto has a very interesting twist though, in that it has mushrooms, sausage and cheese added and cooked separately then all added together at the end layered up in a casserole dish then baked in a 400-degree oven just long enough for the delicious cheddar cheese to get all nice and melted throughout the potato, sausage, mushroom, and onion mixture.
First, you fry the potatoes and set aside in your casserole dish. Then in the same pan drippings, fry your sausage, mushrooms, and onions.
Then, you layer the potatoes, sausage, mushrooms, and onions in a casserole dish with cheese. Bake this lovely medley at 400 degrees until all the cheese melts and serve hot.
This Southern fried dish is delicious and perfect to use up some of your storable food.
