This hourglass quilt block is one of the easiest quilt blocks that you can make and it’s perfect for beginners. However, if you’re an expert quilter, then this is still a must-try for you because it’s a great project to make when you want to pass the time, plus, it has a very pattern that would be a perfect design for your table runner, table topper, pot holder, etc.

Materials for Hourglass Quilt Block:

  • 2 contrasting fabrics
  • Background fabric
  • Marking pen, pencil, or chalk
  • Ruler
  • Scissors or rotary cutter and a cutting mat
  • Fabric pins
  • Needle and thread
  • Iron, for pressing
  • Sewing machine

How to Make an Hourglass Quilt Block:

Step 1

Cut the fabrics according to the instructions, then line the background pieces in half diagonally from corner to corner, and stack the fabrics A and D with their right sides facing. Stitch on either side of the line with ¼ inch seam allowance, then cut them apart in half along the line, and press the seams toward the darker fabric.

Step 2

Line the half-square triangles diagonally along the opposite seam, then stack 2 half-square triangles together with their right sides facing, and match the opposite fabrics as shown in the video. Stitch them on either side of the draw line with ¼ inch seam allowance, then cut them apart, and press open.

Step 3

Do the same for the rest of the pieces and repeat the same steps for fabrics A and B, then square them 6½ inches, and make sure to press them nicely. Arrange the block units as shown in the video, then stitch them per row and then the rows to each other, and give them a good press.
