Not to Do When Opening a Sparkling Wine

  • Shaking it

Do not shake a bottle of sparkling wine.

  • Removing wire

Do not remove the wire. If you remove it, the pressure in the bottle might pop out the cork. If the cork pops out, you might break the ceiling or light, and the wine will overflow. If it flows, you lose the carbon dioxide, which will make your wine taste flat. You don’t want that with your sparkling wine.

  • Leaving the glass on the table and pouring too fast

If you leave the glass on the table and pour too fast, it will overflow.

  • Keep the wire on

Keeping the wire on is for your own and other’s protection. As an extra security measure, you want to keep your thumb on the cork.

  • 45-degree angle

Keep the bottle at a 45-degree angle with one hand and use your other hand to hold the top end.

  • Turn the bottle

Turn the bottle, not the cork, when opening a sparkling wine. As you are turning the bottle and the cork is pulling out, you only want to sound like a soft fizz, not a popping sound.

  • Lift the glass and hold it at 45 degree

Lift the glass off the table and keep it at a 45-degree angle. Pour the very slowly so you don’t spill wine everywhere.
