I love making improv quilts as much as textured ones just like this folded star quilt block by Art Gallery Fabrics on YouTube. This is a pretty intimidating quilt block at first glance, especially if you’re a beginner, but you’ll be surprised to know that this is not as complicated to make as you thought it would be.

Step 1

Fold the foundation piece in half, then again in half, and one more in half diagonally to make a triangle. Press the piece to make creases and set it aside for later. Take the colored square, then fold it in half twice, and press to crease. Unfold it once, then fold one corner down at a 45° angle, and do the same for the other corner to make a triangle, press it down nicely.

Step 2

Do the same steps with the rest of the squares, then lay the smallest triangle over the foundation pieces with its right side up as shown in the video, and pin it in place. stitch them around the edges, then take the next triangle, and place them on top of the previous triangle about 3/8 inch away.

Step 3

Place the remaining triangle of the same color and size in between the previous triangles, then line it up with the diagonal crease and stitch around the raw edges. Follow the previous steps for the next triangles, then keep building until you’ve covered the entire foundation piece, and trim the edges to even it out. Make a small tacking stitch on each fold of each triangle and you’re done!
