A pincushion is a small cushion mostly stuffed with polyfiber fill, used to store pins and needles. It is a convenient and safe way to store them, as you can grab them without having trouble picking them from the stack.

Try to make it at home. It is a quick and easy project you can finish in just a few minutes! Watch the video below for full instructions.

Easy Sunflower Pin Cushion Materials

  • 1/8 yard of yellow cotton fabric for the petals
  • 6.5″ square of brown fabric  for the center
  • heavy-duty brown or black thread
  • yellow quilting thread
  • 1/4 yard of Peltex 71f from Pellin
  • poly fiber fill
  • 90/14 top stitch sewing needles
  • pattern

How to Make a Sunflower Pin Cushion

Step 1:

Cut 13 pieces of 3.5″ squares from the yellow cotton fabric and cut 3 bases from peltex 71F using the pattern. Trace the flower center pattern on the wrong side of the brown fabric and cut leaving a small allowance all around.

Step 2:

Get one of the bases and cut an x in the middle.

Run basting stitches all the way around the circle of the flower center using the tracing as the guide. Place the base inside and pull the thread tight. Cut the thread and clip the fabric all the way around the circle.

Step 3:

Partially stuff it with the filling.

Step 4:

Remove the clips, slightly tighten the thread, and sew big basting stitches around the edge of the flower center.

Step 5:

Take one 3.5″ square and fold it twice. On the wrong side of the fold, place the petal and base template so that it’s on the corners of the fold. Trace, then cut. Do the same for the remaining squares. Use clips to keep them folded.

Baste one petal on the curved side 1/4″ away from the edge. Gently pull the thread, not too tight. Do not cut the thread, continue adding the remaining petals.

Step 6:

Put a needle on both ends of the petals. Tie the first end on the back side of the base. Pin the first petal in place. Distribute the petals all around the flower petals. Tighten them up and pin them in place. Glue them in place. Allow to dry for a few hours.

Step 7:

Get the two remaining bases and place them on the back of the sunflower. Pin them in place.

Step 8:

Use the open-toe foot and the blind hem stitch with a 5.5 width and 2.5 stitch length to sew all the way around the outer edge.
