One of my all-time side dish favorites is creamed spinach. I have tried several recipes online, but there is only one that I always go back to. Always Yummy!‘s version is the best-creamed spinach I have ever tried. It is rich, creamy, and buttery.

This homemade creamed spinach is way better than store-bought ones. You only need 7 ingredients to make it – spinach, milk, butter, all-purpose flour, nutmeg, ground black pepper, and salt. It’s super easy to make; the steps are straightforward. Serve it with medium rare steak, mashed potato, garlic butter shrimp, pork chops, roast chicken, or fish.
Start by thoroughly rinsing the spinach leaves to remove dirt. Dry them out.
Lay the leaves into a saucepan or stockpot. Place the lid and cook over medium heat until the leaves are wilted, then transfer to a bowl or plate. Let it cool down for a little bit.
Once the spinach leaves are cool enough to handle, place them over a clean cloth napkin or cheesecloth and squeeze out any excess liquid. Chop into small pieces.
Place a pan over medium heat and add the butter. Once melted, add the flour and continuously whisk for about 1 to 2 minutes over low heat until all the lumps are gone.
Add the nutmeg into the pan and pour the milk gradually while stirring. Cook for 1 to 2 minutes over low heat.
Add the chopped spinach to the sauce, then season with salt and pepper. Stir until well combined.
Remove from heat and serve as a garnish or starter. Add some thin slices of cheese if preferred. Serve it warm.
Make sure not to leave it for more than 2 hours at room temperature. You can store it in a sealed bag or an air-tight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.
