Have you tried these Southern fried green tomatoes before? If you still haven’t, you should definitely make one. It is crispy on the outside but tender on the inside. It is a classic appetizer recipe that you can make in just 20 minutes. The sliced green tomatoes are covered with flour, dipped in buttermilk, coated with breadcrumbs, then deep-fried until golden brown and crispy. How can you even say no to these delicious appetizers? They are served with a dipping sauce made of mayo, sweet relish, and yellow mustard.

To make these treats at home, you need green tomatoes, eggs, flour, milk, cornmeal, breadcrumbs, salt, and pepper. You can serve them either as an appetizer or as a side dish. It pairs well with chicken wings, sauteed greens, sandwiches, burgers, and chicken enchilada. They are super easy to make and are addicting. For the dipping sauce:
Slice the tomatoes into 1/2″ rounds. Lay them on a paper towel and pat them dry.
In a mixing bowl, add the breadcrumbs and cornmeal. Mix until well combined. Transfer to a plate and spread well.
In a different bowl, add the flour, kosher salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined.
Beat 2 eggs in a bowl, then whisk in the milk. Transfer to a container with a flat bottom.
Arrange them in this order: flour mixture, egg mixture, breadcrumbs mixture.
Get one tomato slice and coat with the flour mixture. Shake excess, then dip into the egg mixture. Coat with the breadcrumbs on all sides. Shake excess and place on a cooling rack.
Pour cooking oil into your pan until it is about 1/2″ deep. Heat until it reaches 350F. Once it comes to temp, add the coated tomatoes, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Cook until browned on all side. Transfer to a plate lined with paper towel.
Make the dipping sauce by combining all the ingredients.
Serve the fried green tomatoes with the sauce. Serve and enjoy!
