4. Rustic Wood Arrow Wall Art
Angie built this arrow over a Styrofoam core, which is the part that makes it doable at home. She cut the shapes using paper templates, glued the foam pieces together with toothpicks hidden inside, then painted the whole form dark brown so no white would show through the gaps later. The wood is old tobacco sticks off her farm, sawn to length and fitted around the form like a jigsaw puzzle with a lot of hot glue. Weathered fence boards or pallet slats would give you the same gray patina. Hers stands in the entryway. It would look just as good leaning on a dresser or hung above a bed. Lori Greco made this for her daughter’s room after finding that the woven wall hangings she liked online were either too expensive or the wrong scale for the space. It is not macrame and she says so plainly, which is the appeal. Lengths of yarn in soft gray, black and white hang in a thick fringe from a stick she picked up in her own yard, with a couple of braided strands and homemade pom poms breaking up the rows, plus two gold rings above it for a little polish. This geometric triangle wall art is a great way to add personality to a plain wall without buying new furniture or rugs to do it. Craftaholics Anonymous cuts the design from a precut wood plank backdrop and a set of precut triangle wood shapes, the kind you can grab at almost any craft store if you don’t want to cut your own. The real trick is tracing a quick outline of the layout before you glue anything down, so you don’t lose track of the arrangement once the hot glue starts setting. This one looks so much harder than it is. Megan cuts a stack of identical chevrons from colored cardstock, glues them in a column up a strip of poster board, then slices the whole column apart at each point where the chevrons meet. Gluing those strips back down onto foam core in a deliberately offset order is what creates the woven herringbone effect. Her finished piece is sixteen by twenty inches and used fewer than nine sheets of cardstock, so you can size it to a frame you already own and pick colors that suit the room. Colleen Pastoor made this oversized canvas for her own living room in a hurry and still gets asked about it years later. The lettering is painted with acrylic craft paint thinned with water and a small round brush rather than a marker, so the strokes hold that dry brushed look with little voids in the color instead of a flat fill. She sketches the words in pencil first and erases the lines once the paint dries. This one is ours and it is the easiest piece on the list to pull off. Paint a canvas whatever color you want, let it dry, then pencil a heart onto it. The texture comes from tissue paper torn small, soaked in water, squeezed out and mixed with glue and a little paint, then packed into the heart shape until the pencil lines disappear. Add another layer if you want the heart to sit higher off the canvas, but go easy or it takes a long time to dry.
