This recipe uses a box of cake mix, so it’s simple and quick to prepare. To make it taste like bakery-style cake, I used butter instead of oil, and milk instead of water. Changing these two ingredients will make a big difference – I promise! This can serve a lot of people, which makes it the perfect treat for parties or gatherings.

Ding Dong Cake Ingredients:

  • 15.25 oz chocolate fudge cake mix
  • ingredients listed on the package of cake mix
  • 2/3 cup of Crisco all vegetable shortening
  • 1/2 cup of butter (softened)
  • 3/4 cup of white granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup of evaporated milk
  • 16 oz tub of chocolate fudge frosting

Note: to make the cake fluffy and taste bakery style, use milk instead of water, bring the eggs to room temperature, and substitute butter for oil

How to Make Ding Dong Cake:

Step 1:

Bake the cake following the instructions on the back of the cake mix box using a 9 x 13 baking dish.

Step 2:

Once the cake is done baking, place it on a wire rack and let it cool completely.

Step 3:

In a stand mixer, add the shortening and butter. Mix for about 2 to 3 minutes until well combined. Next, add the sugar, vanilla, and evaporated milk. Beat for about 8 to 10 minutes on setting 2 until it becomes light and creamy. Once ready, spread over the cooked cake evenly.

Step 4:

Put the chocolate fudge frosting in a microwave-safe bowl and let it melt in the microwave for about 10 seconds, then stir it and put back it back inside for another 10 seconds. After that, stir it again and place it in the microwave for 10 seconds more until it becomes pourable.

Step 5:

Pour the melted frosting over the filling layer and immediately spread it evenly. Keep in mind that the frosting will set fast so you need to spread it quickly.

Step 6:

Let it sit at room temperature for about 2 to 3 hours to allow the frosting set up. You can also place it in the refrigerator for 1 hour to make it set faster. Enjoy!
