Make the cake. Start by preheating your oven to 350F and greasing a 13 x 9 inch baking pan with butter or baking spray and line it with parchment paper.
Add flour, sugars, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, all-spice, and salt in a large mixing bowl. Whisk them together then stir in the walnuts.
Get another medium mixing bowl. Add applesauce, oil, eggs, and vanilla extract and whisk until well-mixed. Combine the wet mixture and dry mixture and stir until just combined. Pour into the prepared pan.
Place inside the preheated oven and bake for 40 to 45 minutes or until a toothpick comes out with a few moist crumbs when inserted into the center. Once done baking, place on a wire rack to cool completely. Remove the cooled cake from the pan and take off the parchment paper, then place it on your serving platter.
Make the frosting. Beat the butter in a large mixing bowl on medium speed until it becomes creamy. Gradually add the sugar while alternating it with the milk until well combined. Next, add the vanilla and beat until it’s fluffy.
Add and spread the frosting over the cake and garnish with some walnuts if preferred.
