Sometimes no matter how hard you try, that stubborn jar lid won’t open. It’s so frustrating when this happens while I’m cooking or when I’m super hungry. The reason for this is that jars are vacuum-sealed in order to preserve freshness. To open it, you need to break the seal. Some jars open easily, but when they don’t, try these simple techniques by Insider Tech. These 6 methods only use household items, so you don’t need to buy any special equipment. Read on or watch the video below for full instructions.
Get a sheet of cling wrap and place it on top of the lid. Twist the cap how you normally would.
Wear a rubber glove on your opening hand and twist the lid.
Did you know you can use rubber bands to open that stubborn jar lid? Just insert the rubber band on the side of the lid just like in the photo below. Twist the lid open.
If the first three steps did not work, try breaking the seal with a wooden spoon. Just tap the lid all around with the wooden spoon and try to open it again.
Use a metal spoon as a lever to open the jar. This lifts the lid and equalizes the pressure.
If the other methods still did not work, try using thermal expansion to loosen it. Metal has higher thermal conductivity than glass causing it to expand faster when heated. Run the lid under hot water for 30 seconds, then open it.
