How to Make the Softest Quilt As You Go Rose Garden

This quilt project by The Sewing Channel on YouTube is now one of my favorite quilts of all time! I enjoyed putting together this quilt and I love the fact that there is no particular way to create the roses and you can just do what you want freely. Plus, you can use whatever set of fabrics you want, and you can achieve this beautiful frayed look pretty easily, too. Here’s a step-by-step guide that you can follow and if you want more details, then be sure to check out the video tutorial.
Materials:
- Different colors and patterns of fabric
- Batting fabric
- Background fabric
- Binding fabric
- Coordinating background fabric
- Scissors or rotary cutter and a cutting mat
- Fabric pins
- Needle and thread
- Iron, for pressing
- Sewing machine
Directions:
Step 1
Improvise the cut of your rose and cut however curved you want, this will be the center and it should measure about 2 to 2.5 inches, then lay it on top of a different fabric, and cut around the rose shape about 1 inch away from the center rose piece. Repeat the step until you have 4 layers of rose fabrics, then cut the leaf pieces about 2.5 inches tall and 1.5 inches wide, and make another set of roses making sure to alternate the colors until you have about 27 pieces. Lay 9.5 inches of background square on your work surface, then place an 8.5 inches square batting on top and another 9.5 inches of background square on top lining them up nicely.

Step 2
Pin them together or baste, then place 1 rose piece at the center, and lay the leaves however you want. Sew the rose following its shape leaving about ¼ inch around the edges for a nice fray, then sew around the outside of the rose following its shape 2 times making sure they are about ½ inch away from each other, and trim the block into 9.25 inches. Continue to sew the rest of the blocks, then lay them out on a large surface and arrange them however you want.
Step 3
Expose the seams of each block and sew them together with a ¼-inch seam allowance as shown in the video, try to catch a bit of the batting while sewing the block, and press the seams nicely. Sew the rectangles on the side, then sew the rows together, and sew the binding around the edges of the layers. Cut along the crease of the binding fabric, then rub the roses to rough them up, and wash the quilt over hot temperature and high agitation. Right after washing and before drying the quilt out, make sure to trim all of the excess frayed thread, then put it in the dryer, and you’re done!
