Power outages, especially during the winter season, are truly stressful, it’s so hard to move around, and do things when you can’t see that well in the dark. There are a lot of options and tools that you can try to make things clearer and light your house up, however, these options are often expensive and cost even more to sustain, replace, recharge, or fix when broken. So, the next time that you experience a power outage make sure that you are prepared without spending a lot of money. Here’s a DIY project by Hungry SciANNtist on YouTube that sure is a keeper, you’ll never buy another emergency lamp because all you’ll be needing is this inexpensive version that you can make using only salt, oil, and cotton.
Step 1
Grab a mason jar, then pour about a cup of salt at the bottom of the jar spreading it out evenly, then pour a cup of clean or used oil (recycling used oil is more inexpensive) above the salt, and set it aside. Grab a small stick or tape together 2 toothpicks, you may also use a safer alternative to adhere them together, then wrap the whole stick with cotton, and twirl it around tightly.

Step 2
Dip one end of the cotton into the oil, then flip it over and put the other end of the stick deep into the salt making sure it stands at the center. Light it up and replace the stick as well as the cotton once it was used up, then cover the jar with the lid to put out the flame safely and easily. This DIY lamp will last a few hours and is easily replaceable.
