Quilting is fun but can also become quite stressful, especially if you like rushing things to see results. Why not take a breather and check out this video from Just Get it Done Quilts on Youtube? This list may make you realize some mistakes you’re making with your domestic sewing machine. Watch the video below to learn the following.
#1 Not taking the time to make a good quilt sandwich
The quilt sandwich is the foundation of your quilting so if you don’t make the effort to make a good quilt sandwich, you will end up having creases in your quilt.
#2 Not planning your quilting pattern
It might seem like a time-waster but do take the time to plan your quilting so that it compliments your quilt top. By doing this, you might discover a lot of things, like if your idea is too difficult for your skill level.
#3 Not quilting forward
To avoid puckers in your quilt, move from one side to the other or from the middle out toward the edges.
#4 Not practicing your design first
It’s amazing what you can discover in your practice pieces. Not only does it warm up those muscle memory skills, but you’ll also see if you have tension issues or how your thread color works.

#5 Not sitting properly
Not sitting properly takes a toll on your body. Your seat should be adjusted so there’s a 90-degree angle at your elbows, hips, and knees. Your core muscles should also be engaged, which means your neck is long, your collarbones are broad, and your ribs are knitted.
#6 Quilting too fast
When you are practicing, find the speed you are comfortable at.
#7 Trying to quilt all at once
Quilting while tired leads to mistakes and uneven results, so take your time. Slow down, pace yourself, take breaks, reset your quilt, and take time to stretch up.
#8 Stressing over mistakes
It’s important to be patient with yourself as you practice and your skills improve.
