Half-square triangles are one of the basic quilting blocks. Every beginner must learn how to make this pattern. It’s very simple – just two triangles sewn together to form a square. There are different ways to make this block. You can make 4 at a time, 8 at a time, 16 at a time, and even 32 at a time.

Easy Ziggy Pop Quilt Materials

  • 1 1/4 yards of medium fabric (1)
  • 1 1/8 yards of light fabric (2)
  • 1 1/8 yards of dark fabric (3)
  • 3 strips of 9.5″ x WOF for border
  • 3 1/2 yards of backing fabric

 

How to Make Ziggy Pop Quilt

Step 1:

Fabric 1

Cut 9 pieces of 6.5″ squares and 10 pieces of 10″ squares.

Fabric 2

Cut 14 pieces of 10″ squares.

Fabric 3

Cut 14 pieces of 10″ squares.

Step 2:

Make half-square triangles. Place two half 10″ squares right sides together. Sew all around the edges with 1/4″ seam allowance. Cut diagonally from corner to corner. Press them open and trim them to 6.5″ squares. You should have 4 half-square triangles.

  • Get 9 pieces of 10″ squares each from fabric 2 and 3, then make 36 half-square triangles.
  • Get 5 pieces of 10″ squares each from fabrics 1 and 2, then make 18 half-square triangles.
  • Get 5 pieces of 10″ squares each from fabrics 1 and 3, then make 18 half-square triangles.

Step 3:

Arrange the squares just like in the photo below. Make sure to match the seams. Sew them in rows first. Once done, sew the rows together to make the block.

Make 9 blocks. Arrange them in 3 rows with 3 blocks each.
