That burning sensation you get in your chest after eating a heavy meal or certain foods isn’t actually caused by too much stomach acid. For detailed explanation, watch the video below.

1. Avoid foods that trigger or aggravate symptoms of acid reflux and GERD

  • Lessen your intake of carbohydrate foods, especially refined carbs as they can cause bacterial overgrowth, gas and bloating.
  • Try to be gluten-free. Foods that contain gluten are a common cause of heartburn.
  • Avoid eating high-fat foods. These include fried foods, pizza, chips, fast food, cheese, nuts, and avocados. This type of food also triggers heartburn.
  • Try to avoid consuming peppermint, coffee, carbonated drinks, alcohol, chocolates, citrus fruits, onion, garlic, tomatoes, peppers, and spicy foods.

2. Add these anti-inflammatory foods and drinks to your diet

  • Fiber-rich foods. Root, leafy vegetables, and legumes like potatoes, sweet potatoes, turnips, carrots, spinach, broccoli, green peas, lentils, and mushrooms.
  • Non-citrus fruits. Watermelon, apple, banana, and pear.
  • High-fiber whole grains. Oatmeal, brown rice, and quinoa.
  • Fermented foods. Kimchi, saukerkraut and yogurt.
  • Low-fat lean protein foods. Chicken, fish, seafood, tofu, and egg whites.
  • Ginger, chamomile tea, and water.

3. Make lifestyle changes

  • Try sleeping on your left side at night. If you sleep on your right side, your reflux symptoms will worsen.
  • Elevate the head of your bed or use a wedge to raise your upper body while sleeping.
  • Eat smaller, more frequent meals. Eat dinner at least 3 hours before bedtime.
  • If you are obese or overweight, consider losing at least 10% of your body weight as excess belly fat squeezes your stomach which causes more fluid to push upwards to your esophagus.
  • Quit smoking
