Are you an ice cream fan? You’ve probably been storing ice cream the wrong way for years!
Ice cream is best consumed immediately after opening as it’s soft and still in its best quality. After opening and placing it back in the freezer, you will notice that the taste and texture are a bit different when you take a scoop since it has been exposed to air. This condition is called freezer burn.

However, did you know there is a trick to prevent this from happening? Let Mashed teach you the proper way to store ice cream and the other things you can do to keep it soft.
During the time the ice cream is spent out of the freezer, it starts to melt. The top of the container becomes melted since it’s the most exposed to air. When you put it back in the freezer, the top layer gets freezer burn.
It is safe to eat but does not taste good. Placing it upside down will allow melty ice cream to drip down onto the lid where it can refreeze into ice crystals.
This trick also works for natural peanut butter.
Take a scoop and put it back into the freezer, instead of eating straight from the carton. The less time it has to warm up, the less time it has to melt. Less melting means less freezer burn.
Your freezer should be at or below 0 degrees Fahrenheit.
Place a plastic wrap or wax paper directly onto the ice cream not across the rim of the carton to prevent air from evaporating the moisture inside.
Use the smallest container possible because a quicker freeze prevents the formation of ice crystals.
