What is your favorite Subway sandwich? If it’s the meatball sub, you have to try Mr. Make It Happen‘s version! I am going to be honest. This homemade recipe is way better than the original one. It is more flavorful. The homemade marinara sauce, meatballs, and garlic butter spread are hard to beat. It will surely be one of your favorite meals once you try it.

Making this subway meatball sub copycat recipe at home is so worth it. The best thing about it is that you can customize the flavors however you want to and don’t have to limit the amount of sauce or cheese in your sandwich. Try it to find out what I am talking about.

For the sauce:
Garlic butter spread:
Make the sauce. Add some olive oil to a skillet. Once hot, add the minced garlic and diced onion. Season with the salt, pepper. garlic powder, onion powder, and red pepper flakes. Mix in the tomato paste.
Add the crushed tomatoes, chopped basil, and parmesan cheese. Mix until well combined. Make a taste test. Adjust seasonings if needed. Cover and set on the back burner. Allow it to simmer on low.
Make the meatballs. In a medium sized bowl, add the ground beef, garlic and herb cheese, onion, sour cream, parsley, seasonings, and eggs. Mix until well combined. Lastly, mix in the breadcrumbs. Fold it a couple of times until it takes a nice shape. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
Get the meat mixture and form into meatballs. Place in a baking sheet lined with aluminum foil. Season with more seasonings.
Place a cast iron skillet over medium heat and add some avocado oil. Once hot, add the meatballs and cook until browned on all sides.
Add to the browned meatballs to the sauce.
Make the garlic butter spread by combining all ingredients in a bowl.
Cut the hoagie roll. Spread the garlic butter on the inside on both sides. Place in the oven for about 5 to 6 minutes.
Spread the marinara sauce, then add the meatballs. Top with mozzarella cheese on top. Place in the broiler until the cheese melts. Grate parmesan cheese on top. Garnish with chopped basil or parsley. Serve and enjoy!
