Instructions

Step 1:

Take a strip and cut some 2 1/2″ squares for the center of the blocks. You need 25 pieces. Out of one strip, you’ll get 16 squares, so you will need 2 strips. As you work your way with the blocks, remember that on one side, you will use light fabrics and dark fabrics on the other.

Step 2:

Get a light strip and cut a 2 1/2″ square. Sew it to one center square with a 1/4″ seam allowance. Press it open.  Next, get a 4 1/2″ by 2 1/2″ light strip and sew it onto the unit with a 1/4″ seam allowance to make a square. Press it open.

Step 3:

Get a dark strip and lay it on your unit’s right sides together. Sew it on the side of the center square, and cut the excess. Remember, you are working on the dark side. Press it open. Next, place your unit again on the same strip and sew on the other side of the center square. Cut the excess and press it open.

Place the same trip on your working block on the other light side and sew with a 1/4″ seam allowance. Trim off the excess and press it flat.

Step 5:

Repeat step 5 but with the dark strip and on the dark side of the block.

Step 6:

Now, you have the block. Trim it into a square.
