Signs of dehydration

  • Dry mouth
  • Dry skin
  • Dry eyes
  • Stays sick longer
  • Fatigued and lethargic
  • Hunger pangs

Directions:

Dry mouth

Every time you have that sticky and nasty feeling in your mouth you would obviously reach for some liquid and drink it. However, keep in mind that sugary drinks are only a temporary solution to your dehydration, but drinking water helps more as it lubricates the mucous membrane in your mouth and throat which will keep your mouth moist with saliva long after that first sip.

Dry skin

Skin is the largest organ of our body and it needs to stay hydrated if you want to avoid breakouts. Lack of water means a lack of sweat which leads to the body’s inability to wash away excess dirt and oil accumulated throughout the day. So if you want to prevent dry skin, simply drink more water.

Dry eyes

Same with dry mouth and skin, your eyes will also dry out. Without enough water, your tear ducts will become dry and turn red. This could also become very harmful and uncomfortable, especially for people wearing contact lenses.

Stays sick longer

Drinking water allows your body to flush out toxins continuously, your organs work to filter out certain waste products and can’t work properly if you are not hydrated enough. Dehydrated body organs will start to pull water from stored areas like the blood which leads to a whole new set of problems, being fatigued and lethargic are a few.

Hunger pangs

When we are dehydrated, our body sometimes thinks that it needs food that would make us feel hungry, especially in the middle of the night, so those midnight snacks that you’re eating might be because you are thirsty, not hungry. Food creates more work from your body than water does.

How to test if you are dehydrated?

Simply pinch the skin on the back of your hand, if the fold of your skin smooths out straight away, then you are hydrated. But, if the skin stays in the position even for a moment, you’re dehydrated, and you need to have a glass of water right away.
